Holy Communion Sundays at 8:15 & 10:30 am
Visitor welcome & FAQ
We understand how it feels to visit a church for the first time, especially when you’re not sure what to expect!
First of all, we want to say “Welcome! We’re glad you’re considering visiting Luther Memorial!”
We want you to feel comfortable and hope this information will help. If you have questions, please contact us.
Arriving
Although we are located downtown in the heart of campus, people arrive from all destinations. Some walk, some drive, some bike, some take the bus. Our front doors open onto University Avenue. As you enter the worship space, feel free to take any seat you like. If you need assistance, please ask an usher or anyone near you.
Guest parking
You are welcome to use our guest parking behind the church. Enter the parking garage from Conklin Place alley. Inside the garage, look for the door marked Church Entrance. Follow the down ramp into the church. This passageway accommodates wheel chairs and walkers, with easy access to an elevator. You’ll find the nave (sanctuary) two floors up.
Assistance
Our Sunday ushers are always happy to help. They can provide you with assistive listening devices and large print bulletins. They can point out restrooms, places to hang your coat, the nursery, Sunday school classrooms, or anything else you may need. Just ask.
Children
You will quickly see we have people of all ages at Luther Memorial and little ones are always welcome at worship. For parents who wish to have their younger children cared for during worship, our nursery is staffed from 9:15-11:45 am on Sunday mornings during the academic year. We also provide a kid’s corner in the narthex (lobby) – the carpeted area with rocking chair and activity bags – if you’d like to step out of worship for a short break. The nursery is open but unstaffed during the summer.
After worship
After worship please stay for refreshments in the narthex (lobby). We have our own brew of coffee – Reformation Roast – made for us by the folks at Just Coffee. The narthex at Luther Memorial is a great place to meet people from nearby and all over the world.
Information
Stop by the welcome desk in the narthex (lobby) to find out what’s happening at Luther Memorial, sign up for events, inquire about membership, and ask questions. The desk is staffed on Sunday mornings. Help yourself to literature anytime.
Your Sunday bulletin (worship program) includes a copy of the Weekly – a source for news and events at LM. Please attend anything that interests you!
Education classes (Fall-spring)
We offer learning opportunities for all ages. On Sunday mornings, children gather for Sunday School from 9:15-10:15. Adults and older children attend Sunday Forum in the Great Room (downstairs) at the same time to hear speakers on a variety of topics. Confirmation classes and special study groups meet on Sunday nights.
How should I dress?
Our hope is that you feel welcome and comfortable. You will see people from jeans to jackets, from ties to tees, but please don’t worry about what you are wearing, we are gathered to give thanks to God.
I’m not from a Christian background and don’t have much experience attending Christian worship, is that OK?
Yes. All are welcome. Given our location on campus, we have visitors from all over the world and from all different faiths. Many come to experience Christian worship for the first time. You are invited to participate as much as you like, and let us know what questions you have or how we can help you.
What if I want more information after I visit?
We are happy to help! Please contact us – call or email – with any questions you may have, or stop by the welcome desk to let us know you’d like further information or be added to our regular mailing list.
