A composition for one or more voices usually comprising solos, duets, recitatives, and choruses and sung to an instrumental accompaniment (Merriam-Webster)
Bach’s Glorious Gifts
The great composer Johann Sebastian Bach composed over 300 cantatas, most of which were intended for Lutheran worship. The scripture, poetry, and chorale (hymn) lyrics that Bach wedded with his musical mastery created works that speak to every emotion and stage of the Christian life from lament to joy, baptism to death. Though centuries old, these works are just as relevant today as they were when they were first heard.
Putting Bach in Context
In Dane County, there is no shortage of musicians who perform Bach’s sacred masterworks. However, Luther Memorial is the only organization that regularly presents them in their original context—Lutheran worship. Luther Memorial’s all-volunteer adult choir, accompanied by an orchestra of UW students and parishioners annually present a cantata every Reformation Sunday (the last Sunday of October) during a service of Vespers (Evening Prayer). A festive reception follows the service.
The Gift of Bach
Luther Memorial presents these cantatas as a gift to the community. If you would like to make a monetary donation to strengthen this ministry, please visit our Giving page, select “music ministry” from the dropdown menu, and write “Bach Cantatas” in the notes line.
