Holy Communion Sundays at 8:15 & 10:30 am
But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” – Matthew 19:14
Children are precious members of our congregation, and LM provides many opportunities to support and encourage young and their families in their journeys of faith.
Safe and welcome
All LM staff and volunteers pass a criminal background check and receive up-to-date training in the protection of vulnerable persons. LM is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all children. We embrace neurodiversity, and you’ll find many accommodations (such as noise-cancelling headphones, light covers, fidget toys and quiet spaces) in our classrooms and gathering areas.
The children’s corner
Located in the narthex and stocked with toys, books, and activities, the children’s corner is a space for young people to snack and play before, during and after service. Children are also welcome to bring items into the nave!
Nursery
While all children are welcome to worship with their parents/guardians, childcare is also available 9-11:45 am on Sunday mornings in the nursery. Located near the nave, the nursery is a spacious room with plenty of age-appropriate toys and games. It is staffed by UW-Madison students, who provide a kind and consistent presence for little ones.
Sunday school (9:15-10:15 am)
Students ages K-5th grade attend Sunday school during the academic year. We welcome students and families as they arrive with a 15-minute gathering time of songs and games before students disperse to their classrooms. Each class is taught by one or two dedicated adult volunteers, many of whom have decades of experience. Each classroom averages about five students across two grade levels. Students grow their biblical knowledge each week through games, activities and conversation.
Confirmation (9:15-10:15 am)
Middle school students (grade 6-8) attend confirmation class on Sunday mornings and enjoy two weekend retreats each year. This group, co-led by two experienced teachers, digs deep into questions of faith, life in the church and our roles in society. It is a safe and welcoming place for students of all backgrounds to grow and learn. Confirmation for eighth grade students is celebrated in the spring.
Sunday morning for parents
While their children are busy at Sunday school and confirmation, many parents enjoy coffee and conversation in the gathering area or the Luther Room.
Youth groups
Run by the youth and family ministry coordinator, LM has three youth groups: grades 4-5, middle school and high school. Each youth group meets once a month on Sunday morning (in place of Sunday school or confirmation). Multiple social and service opportunities are offered as well. Youth groups are an opportunity for students to deepen their relationships with God and with one another in a comfortable and casual atmosphere.
Children’s choir (Sundays, 12-12:30 pm)
Children’s choir, led by the LM director of music, meets for short rehearsals on Sundays during the academic year and sings 4-5 times per year, usually during the 10:30 service. No prior musical training is needed – all students grades 1-6 are welcome to join!
Family group
We treasure our relationships with each other and offer monthly opportunities for families of all ages to spend time together. From potlucks and game nights to hikes and camping, there’s something for everyone!
