Let your light so shine!

Installation of new lights in Luther Memorial's nave: a photo progress report

Work began August 30 on replacement of the lamp fixtures in the nave. From September 5 through October 3, worship services were held in the Great Room, and the Adult Forum met in the Multipurpose Room of the Lutheran Campus Center next door.

The project, includes eight new 36-inch-high, 16-inch-wide lanterns centered on the stained glass windows above the pews; lighting on the side aisles, and additional lighting at side walls of the choir balcony. Fixtures at the north walls of the east and west transepts will be replaced and lowered.

Kubala Washatko Architects, LMH Lighting, Vogel Brothers, Custom Metal, and Forward Electric presented the plans.

The Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) has said the church can no longer use the catwalk above the nave to replace bulbs in the six old "gym lights," some of which have burned out.

The project will cost $225,000. Most of the money has been raised, but donations are still being sought.

The church is selling T shirts and polo shirts with the "Let Your Light So Shine" words, picture of a new light fixture, and the church name embroidered on the chest. Polo shirts, $23, and T shirts, $12, are available before and after Sunday services or at the church office. Shirts in several colors on display

Family looking past construction barrier
After services in the Great Room, parishoners take a peek at the progress made in the first week of work.
Ceiling with old lights but no catwalk It's hard to see beyond the glare of the "gym lights," but almost all of the catwalk that blocked the view of the ceiling peak is gone. The pews have been moved aside to make room to work, and pieces of the catwalk are piled on the plywood-covered floor.

Light fixture on floor
Construction lift in nave

The lift used by the workers fit in through the front doors of the church. When in use, legs swing out to the sides and the spine raises and telescopes to lift a worker to the 81-foot-high peak of the ceiling. The "gym lights" are gone.

One of the new fixtures, not quite complete, stands in front of the nave lighting project display in the narthex.

Worship returns to the Nave with the new lights. The lights, turned to about 80 percent of full brightness, provide more light for reading bulletins and hymnals. The lights also shed more light on the ceiling, which is no longer obscured by the catwalk.

Some fine tuning is yet to be finished, including reducing the glare (seen in the upper right of the picture at right) from the lights pointing to the choir loft.
