Outreach

The Liturgy of Holy Communion concludes with the sending: “Go in peace.  Serve the Lord.” The people respond, “Thanks to be to God.”  Luther Memorial’s outreach bears this dynamic: called in, we are nourished by Christ; sent out, we serve—we reach out in thanksgiving with the mercy and justice of God, the crucified and risen Christ for the life of the world.

Luther Memorial Preschool

As a ministry of Luther Memorial Church, the preschool shares the love and joy of Christ in its teaching and nurturing of children. Through its tuition scholarship program, the preschool strives to make high quality early education a possibility for all families. Learn about enrollment for your child or volunteer opportunities at www.luthermem.org/preschool.

Christmas Gifts for Transitional Families

For many years Luther members have participated in a program of the Madison Metropolitan School District to provide Christmas gifts to families that are currently or have recently been homeless. Luther members buy, wrap, sort and deliver gifts to more than 90 children and adults.

The Road Home

We are a host site for The Road Home of Dane County. Four weeks per year, Luther houses several homeless families in Sunday School classrooms. Members of Luther and our partner churches, Geneva and Christian Science, donate food for meals and volunteer to set up and clean up the classrooms, cook meals, play with children, do laundry, and stay overnight as hosts. Check the calendar online and the sign-up board in the narthex for upcoming service opportunities.

Mission Trips

Luther Memorial annually sends a group of high school youth and adults to rural Appalachia for a summer mission trip through the Appalachian Service Project. We will be hosting another trip in June of 2012.  While still in the early planning stages, Pastor Wilson and the Outreach Committee are working on organizing an overseas mission trip opportunity to Kenya and Tanzania, tentatively planned for January, 2013.

Savory Sunday

Savory Sunday cooks at the Lutheran Campus Center and serves a free lunch downtown to homeless people. An LM member is a “captain” of this organization, and several members participate.

Meals on Wheels

Luther Memorial members deliver Sunday dinner on the Oakwood route four months a year.
