The Luther Memorial Church Columbarium, established in 1996 with 24 niches for cremains of deceased church members, has been expanded to include another 60 niches. Eventually, more than 350 will be available. The columbarium has a red oak and granite book stand, given by Arthur and Evelyn Swenson, for a red leather loose-leaf book of remembrance, given by Claude and Irma Taylor. The book will contain short biographies--baptismal and death dates, names of family members, and short personal histories--of people inurned in the columbarium. The stone communion railing used for many years in the chancel has been reassembled and placed on new limestone piers around the border of the columbarium. This has been made possible through a gift from Alice Ressler and her family. A gift from Owen Slauson in memory of his wife made it possible to install a mosaic tile floor in the columbarium. The multi-colored granite and limestone floor was designed by the architectural firm of Kubala Washatko of Cedarburg. The church's original limestone baptismal font has been placed permanently on the new floor. A set of quilts made by Ruth Ann Peters out of old paraments once used on the altar and pulpit hang on the columbarium wall. The quilt design is based on the pattern of the stained glass windows in the nave. The dignified, chapel-like setting eventually will include a steel and wood decorative grate as shown in this drawing. Visitors are welcome to enter the columbarium space for quiet meditation and reflection from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Any person who has been, at any time, a member in good standing of Luther Memorial is eligible to purchase space in the columbarium for him/herself and/or family members. Brochures about the columbarium are available in the church office. |
