sunday-school

Amy Grunewald Mattison

Amy Grunewald Mattison,
Sunday School coordinator

While the sun is shining high today in the middle of the summer, just a few weeks from now a new school year begins and so does Luther Memorial Sunday school! I hope the summer has given you time to both rest and have adventures as you’ve created new summer memories for your family.
This school year our Sunday School theme is centered on ideas of “Welcome!” and how Jesus welcomed the people he encountered during his ministry. How do we welcome those we know well and those we don’t know at all? How do we feel welcomed by others? Has your child rekindled a summer friendship or met a newcomer to the neighborhood? Maybe your family has traveled and met people along the way. Maybe you are looking forward to the school year and reconnecting with the friends your family has from school. Every day we are given opportunities to welcome others; how does Jesus teach us to do so? During our worship and at times in our classrooms, students will explore how we welcome and are welcomed by others.

First day of Sunday School

Sunday, Sept. 11 | 9:15 am
On Sunday, Sept. 11 at 9:15 am, we’ll meet in the hallway outside the offices to sing our way upstairs. We’ll sing, have some treats and decorate our door with our names, as well as meet the teachers and see the classrooms for the year. Children may also bring coins for our noisy coin offering which will be given to a Luther Memorial ministry during the fall.

Register now!

It’s time to register your child(ren) for Sunday School! You can register at the welcome desk, or download the registration form here. Please register by Sunday, Aug. 21 to help us plan for the year. If your child needs any extra help in the classroom setting, please note it on the form. Forms may be returned to the welcome desk, mailed to the church office or emailed to office@luthermem.org. Thank you!

Volunteer opportunities

Please consider participating in Sunday School as a volunteer! Email amygrunewaldmattison@gmail.com if you can help.
We need donations and a volunteer or two to help with our opening day: berries, oranges, nut-free snack crackers, cheese, balloons, help with door banner. We also need help redoing bulletin boards in the gathering room sometime prior to Sunday, Sept. 11. Date and time are flexible, come when you can!

Church picnic

Saturday, Sept. 17 | 4 pm
Rennebohm Park
All are invited to an all-church picnic on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Rennebohm Park. Gather at 4 pm for a kickball game, conversation and play, followed by a potluck picnic at 5 pm. Bring a main dish, side, appetizer or dessert to share. Lemonade, cups, plates, napkins and utensils will be available. Bring water bottles and any other beverages. Glass containers are not allowed. Contact Kirsten Heggeseth with questions at kheggeseth@gmail.com.

Hosting The Road Home

Sept. 11-18
Our church is hosting The Road Home again on Sept 11-18, which means Sunday School is signed up to provide the evening meal on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Will you help? Please email Amy at amygrunewaldmattison@gmail.com with the item you can bring or if you can host our guests for dinner or help in the kitchen (5-7 pm). Items needed: buns (20), hot dogs (3 packages), brats (4 packages), chips (2 packages), veggie tray (1), dessert (for approx. 20 people).

Training and Children’s Choirs

September also marks the beginning of choir rehearsals. Children ages 5 through 2nd grade are welcome to join the Training Choir, directed by Ann McDermott, 4:15-5 pm Sunday afternoons Sept through May. This choir is musically and spiritually rich as well as a lot of fun. Older children (3rd grade through 6th grade) may join the Children’s Choir, directed by Bruce Bengtson, and also meeting 4:15-5 pm on Sundays. This choir leads worship the first Sunday each month at the 8 am service. To learn more, contact Bruce Bengtson at bengtson@luthermem.org or (608) 258-3160.
